Halitosis and Treatment of Halitosis

Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath can be caused by many different reasons and is a common problem for dentists. These reasons can be the following:

  • Intraoral Causes: Decayed teeth, gingivitis, old fillings, incompatible prosthetic treatments, half-erupted wisdom teeth and inadequate oral care are common causes of bad breath. Gingivitis and related bleeding gums are usually the main cause of bad breath.

  • Systemic Causes: Diabetes, dry mouth due to decreased saliva secretion, reflux, mouth breathing due to nasal congestion, smoking, sinus and lung infections, prolonged hunger and thirst can also cause bad breath.

In order to treat bad breath correctly, intraoral and systemic causes should be investigated in detail.

How Should Bad Breath Treatment Be?

  1. Dental Examination: The first stage of treatment should start at the dentist. Cavities, old fillings and root canal treatments should be restored. Tartar should be removed and gum infections should be treated. In addition, the areas of fixed and removable dentures where food residues may remain should be organized.

  2. Oral Hygiene Education: Following dental treatment, individuals should be trained in oral hygiene and encouraged to pay attention to tongue hygiene.

  3. Routine Controls: After oral treatments are completed, bad breath should be followed up with regular check-ups. When all factors causing bad breath are eliminated, if the complaint persists, the patient should be referred to the otolaryngology and gastroenterology departments for the detection and treatment of systemic diseases.

Successful treatment of halitosis is important both to maintain oral health and to ensure social and psychological well-being.
